  • FAO Chairs of SACREs: As you are aware, there is widespread concern that the English Baccalaureate is threatening the future of RE in schools, albeit unintentionally. Here are two letters that you can adapt for your local area and add local flavour. One is to secondary headteachers in your LA, asking them to consider carefully the arrangements they put into place for next September. The other is to your local MP. NASACRE wants to support the national lobbying of the DfE to have the place of RE assured and this is best served by having it in the Ebacc.

  • Savage cuts in ITE: All the UK providers of RE ITE have been cut by between 40 and 55%

  • Sad News : It is with great sadness that we report the death of Professor Terrence Copley. Terrence made an enormous contribution to RE and inspired many teachers of RE during his time at York, Exeter and Oxford.

  • Lobbying: It is important that the lobbying on behalf of RE continues. Whilst in replies to letters the DfE has repeated that statutory and compulsory nature of RE its place in the EBacc or in the curriculum is still uncertain. NASACRE urges all chairs of SACREs to write to the SoS - see Bill's letter for some ideas.

  • White Paper for Education: The Importance of Teaching is now available. This is a vital document and we would recommend all those involved in education read it. A synopsis is available [from the AREIAC website] but you can also download the full paper.

    The Chair and executive have responded to the White Paper - download and urge you to do likewise and encourage teachers to do the same.

    There has also been a statement about the English Bacc. RE does not appear in the list of subject for the Humanities option again we urge you to write to the SoS (govem@parliament.uk) and you MP to lobby about this.

  • Karl D’Cruz - 7.12.43- 10.08.10. It is with great sadness that we have to announce the death of Karl D’Cruz. Karl was a very experienced religious educator, a passionate supporter of SACREs, an active member of AREIAC, and a longstanding member of the NASACRE Executive.There will be tributes to Karl in the next edition of SACRE News.

  • EFTRE Newsletter: The Spring 2010 newsletter from the European Forum for Teachers of RE is now available to download
  • REsilience update: This is an important stage in the development of the project as a pilot study is presently being carried out in a number of English schools, in preparation for the roll out in September 2010. Evaluation of the pilot will help to identify strengths as well as areas which might need to be refined or improved. All information about REsilience can now be found on the website which will include a regular newsletter which will replace updates.
  • Grants of up to £6,000 are available to support a wide variety of local inter faith activities in a range of community settings, including innovative new ideas as well as ‘tried and tested’ approaches - more

  • The BBC has reported on The Runnymede Trust's interim findings from a consultation on the establishment of community cohesion in particular areas of the country and what the phrase and its impact mean to the people in these areas. See the BBC article. and the link to the trust’s interim report can be located below. This interim report by Professor Audrey Osler presents some initial observations from the faith schools and community cohesion project. It draws upon a series of community consultation workshops that took place with local stakeholders around the country in summer 2007. The report highlights shared challenges as well as diverse and particular responses to ways in which a school system that includes faith schools successfully prepares young people for living in a multicultural society.
